Basic Qualifications for Alumni Membership

To be considered for membership in Alpha Lambda Chapter through the alumni intake process, you must meet the following requirements:

Demonstrate good character and high ethical standards, consistent with the aims and mission of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Show commitment to community service and leadership, as evidenced by your personal and/or professional involvement.

The following items are required to complete an application for membership. Instructions on completing each portion are contained in the application.

Official College Transcript (Alumni candidates should have transcripts that show their degree has been conferred.)
Proof of Voter Registration (Proof of citizenship from the country of origin, visa, or permanent resident card for candidates not eligible to vote in the United States); voter registration application will NOT be accepted
Secure letters of recommendation, including two from financial (active) members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Lambda Chapter

Ability to pass a Background check
Payment of the national application fee

What is the process to become a member?

The membership process begins by attending an official informational session hosted by Alpha Lambda Chapter. You will receive guidance on next steps, expectations, and documentation required. If selected to move forward, you will undergo a formal membership process approved by the General Organization.

Can I join if I’m a graduate student?

Yes. If you have already earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, you are eligible to pursue membership through an alumni chapter, regardless of whether you are currently enrolled in graduate studies.

Do I need to know someone in the chapter?

While not required at first, you must eventually be recommended and sponsored by at least two financial member of Alpha Lambda Chapter. We encourage prospective members to attend public service events, community programs, and chapter fundraisers to build relationships and learn more about our brotherhood.

How much does it cost to join?

Membership involves local, regional, and national financial obligations, which will be outlined in detail during the official interest session. Financial readiness is a key part of becoming and remaining an active member. Interests are encouraged to save between $2,500.00 and $3,500.00 between membership fees, chapter dues, and attendance at their first Regional Convention.

Does Alpha Phi Alpha Haze?

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. joins other fraternities, sororities, parents and academic institutions in the fight against hazing. No one person can eliminate hazing. It takes the commitment of everyone involved in the process of joining a group organization to make it happen. We encourage you to review our Anti-Hazing Policy & Statement.
