Bro. Branch has co-authored and published a book meant to help African American Males navigate the rocky waters of post-graduate education. Titled the Black Man’s Guide to Graduate School, the book is aimed at an audience most in need of such advice. Black’s by and large don’t have the same type of access to peer groups and parents that have already been through such programs. The already paltry rate of black males in higher education is only magnified at the level of graduate education.
When asked about the nexus of the idea Bro. Branch had this to say, “We all seemed to have numerous pieces of advice that we wished someone could have told us. If future students could learn from our mistakes, that means they would never have to go through them. The idea took off from there…”
The black community is in dire need of role models. With such outsize incarceration rates, unemployment, healthcare issues, and the like education is a tool that can successfully wage this battle on all fronts. “We want to build an army of black role models to lift up the communities from which they came”, says Bro. Branch.
