The Alpha Lambda Chapter is currently engaged in a historic fundraising effort. Alpha Lambda, in partnership with the University of Louisville Foundation, is sponsoring historic 'Civil Rights Era' markers throughout various areas of downtown Louisville which commemorate actions and events of individuals whom helped lead the fight to gain equal opportunities for all people throughout the Greater Louisville community in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Alpha Lambda is sponsoring two (2) markers that have significant ties to a great community servant, trailblazing civil rights pioneer and Alpha Phi Alpha Member, Lyman T. Johnson. In 1961, Brother Johnson was instrumental in leading a sit-in style boycott of the former Walgreens location at Fourth and Chestnut Streets. The Alpha Lambda sponsored markers will sit at the former Walgreens site at Fourth and Chestnut Street and the Kaufman Strauss site.
Current planning calls for the markers to be completed and ready for official unveiling sometime in February 2014 in commemoration with Black History Month. Please consider joining us by making a donation. Our fundraising efforts are on going. Your consideration and help toward this cause is greatly appreciated.
